Vikramshila University Kahalgaon Bhagalpur

*The Vikramshila University are located near Antichak in Kahalgaon Bhagalpur District of Bihar.

History - Vikramashila was founded by Pāla king Dharmapala in the late 8th or early 9th century. It prospered for about four centuries before it was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji along with the other major centres of Buddhism in India around 1193.

Sprawling over an area of 100 acres, the Vikramshila University .



[T]here were great number of books on religion of Hindus and Buddhists there; and when all these books came under the observation of the Mussalamans, they summoned, a number of Hindus that they might give them information regarding the import of these books; but the whole of the Hindu community had been killed in the war.




*Vikramaśīla University was one of the two most important centers of Buddhist learning in India, along with Nālandā University .




*Cultural activities

The Vikramashila site is the place for Vikramashila Mahotsav, which is held annually during the month of February.

*How to reach there

First Route

Th nearest big town is Kahalgaon about 13 km, It is approachable through 11 km long motorable road diverting from NH-80 at Anadipur, about 2 km from Kahalgaon.
Lately river cruises from Kolkata to Varanasihave started, which also stop by the Vikramashila ruins.

2nd Route

By Air: Patna would be the nearest airport at about 291 km.
By Rail: The closest railway station would definitely be Khalgaon.
By Road: It is around 281 km from Gaya, 391 km from Motihari, 308 km from Muzaffarpur, 245 km from Biharsharif and 310 km from Bodhgaya
